Game Of Thrones: The Origin Of Jon Snow

With the sixth season of Game of Thrones upon us, it seems the big question going forward is the fate of Jon Snow. With the season five cliff hanger leaving the jaws of countless fans on the floor long behind us, it’s safe to assume that Kit Harrington will be making his triumphant return.

This return raises the next question about the character: His origin. Here is the last hare-brained Jon Snow theory before season 6 begins this weekend.

I should preface this by admitting the entire article will be fraught with spoilers. Be warned!

Still here? OK…

In a world where everyone has their own theories as to how Jon Snow could still be alive – or revived, or the son of Liana Stark and Rhaegar Targarian – I think we may have stumbled blindly onto the least likely/most awesome combination of what’s to come!

First, we have to take a walk down memory lane. During season 1, the only real conversation Jon has with Ned about his mother, comes on the heels of his deciding to take the black and join the Night’s Watch with his uncle. Ned is off to King’s Landing to serve as the Hand of the King, but before they part Jon asks if his mother is alive, if she thinks of him, and if she has any idea what he’s doing. To which Ned replies that it’s too much to discuss now, but “the next time we meet, we will talk about your mother.”

As fate would have it, that meeting can never happen since we all  know George R. R. Martin’s penchant for killing every main character and their mother (sorry Cat…). But why have that talk? Why make it so serious of a moment and never resolve it? Anyone who was there or knew first hand who Jon’s parents were are now long since dead and all we have are stories and hints as to who may know what.

But hear me out!

Imagine Jon Snow is dead. Actually dead. And in the interim, Melisendra is there working up a way to bring him back. Jon has a post life meeting with the one man who can answer his questions. Maybe even offer some words of advice. He could rise with memories of his parents still ringing in his ears.

This would mean we get Jon Snow back, we get Sean Bean back for a cameo episode, and we finally get the proof that the bastard son of Winterfell is actually the true heir to the Targarian line and rightful king of Westeros in one fell swoop. And as a fun side fact: His oaths to the Night’s Watch are fulfilled since he is dead. If he comes back, he still did his duty before leaving.
