Ultron: The Strings Of Fear

Like any good relationship, it’s important to kick one off on an honest note. How much did we really know about who Ultron really was before the announcement of the second Avengers movie? We knew he was a robot constructed of Adamantium by Hank Pym. That’s actually about it…Somehow many of us missed the boat on what would become the focus of the latest and greatest by Marvel Studios and the mind of Joss Whedon.

Lucky for you, dear reader, we here at CYNOBS do our homework!

Without attempting to spoil anything Marvel may choose to use as reveals; this serves as a way to sum up what we’re most excited about heading into this new film. Our hope is to shed some light on who Ultron is and why we, as fans, should be excited.

Marvel Comics

In short, Ultron dates all the way back to the mid 1960’s in comic book lore. Marvel loves the notion of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” They stick to their formulas pretty hard when creating their heroes and villains. Example 1: Scientific accident by the hands of one of the world’s greatest minds in an attempt to create something to benefit mankind. Enter Ultron, who was contrived by none other than Hank Pym, also known as “Ant Man.”

Cliché aside, following that lab accident we have a monster sporting indestructible Adamantium armor. This occurred years and years before everyone’s favorite furry cigar smoking mutant, Wolverine, was even a twinkle in the eye of Len Wein and John Romita, Sr.

Ultron can never stop learning, assessing, and rebuilding himself. Continually becoming smarter, better, faster, and stronger. Hidden in the sub-programming of every Ultron bot is the intense desire to recreate itself. Comic book history teaches us how he has destroyed and enslaved planets and brought the Avengers to their knees countless times through both Ultron Prime and drones he created for his army.

If Marvel has taught us anything, it’s that everyone has a weakness. Ultron’s Achilles heel? What else? Women. With his off the charts intelligence, he continual attempts to build the perfect mate; tugging at whatever humanity can be found within him. Yet, his perfect mate always turns against him, time and again; helping the world’s greatest heroes defeat him.

As noted before, and something important to remember throughout, is that Ultron inherently needs to constantly better himself. This path to enlightenment almost always leads him to Wakanda; the African country that boasts the only veins in the world of Vibranium. This is the the same stuff that makes up Captain America’s shield.

Sidenote: we don’t need to have a nerd war over which is better. Ultron is always right and smarter than all living creatures. He went with Vibranium, so we’re inclined to agree.

With the synopsis out of the way, we must be excited to see how Ultron plays with the movie cast in its current iteration and makeup. It has already been revealed that Ultron’s origin is of Stark’s design instead of Pym’s. So it appears we are not going to see a great jungle battle in the middle of Wakanda where Black Panther comes to our heroes rescue. Just try to contain yourself with how badass that would that be! It seems we are going to get an entirely different Ultron than we are used to seeing.

All we can say is that people will speculate if Ultron is another puppet in some other larger game. After a crash course lesson in all things Ultron, nothing could be further from the truth. He is no one’s puppet. He is a force to be reckoned with. He never loses and if he is set back for any reason it is temporary at best. There has never been an incarnation of Ultron who, when facing any of Marvel’s top dogs, hasn’t won first.

Yes, we may get the door-closed-happy-ending by the end. But for some reason, this particular contributor doesn’t feel like making such a bold assumption just yet.

My guess? There will be blood. How much? And whose? Those are questions millions of fans are dying to find out. We will just have to wait and see. One nerdy agonizing second at a time.
