MOVIE REVIEW: Beyond The Lights

Director: Gina Prince-Bythewood

Cast: Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Nate Parker, and Minnie Driver

Synopsis: “Beyond The Lights” is a story of how even if you have fame, fortune, and family, it isn’t enough if it means surrendering everything that defines you. “Beyond the Lights” is about how it only takes one person to see you for who you really are to make you believe in yourself. It just takes that one person to believe you are someone who can make it in this world without sacrificing every ounce of integrity and self worth you possess. It is about being brave enough to be the real you.

Movie Review:

BTL1

Gina Prince-Bythewood is at it again with a powerful love story that goes deeper than just your typical hearts and flowers. The film revolves around an award winning pop singer and an ambitious police officer who found each other under “intense” circumstances. But once they were in each other’s lives, there was no turning back. His need to help her and her desire to want to help herself made them connect and become inseparable.

BTL2

Gugu Mbatha-Raw truly shined in “Beyond The Lights” by delivering nothing but raw emotion as the main character (Noni Jones) throughout the entire story. By pairing her and Nate Parker together in this movie with a supporting role from Minnie Driver, audiences should expect a talented and brilliant performance. This movie isn’t just a love story though. “Beyond the Lights” also touches on the harsh realities of law enforcement and the music industry; two professions that are routinely glorified for the wrong reasons.

BTL3

Gina Prince-Bythewood is a beautiful story teller, but this love story will force audiences to take a step back and ask themselves some very hard, yet important questions. Questions like, what is worth saving about you? How are you supposed to stay morally on track when your family is responsible for throwing your moral compass out the window? What defines a hero? Is being a hero just saving someone’s life, or is it also making that person realize that they are someone worth saving? “Beyond the Lights” encompasses all these questions and puts them on screen for everyone to see. By the end of the movie you are left feeling touched and inspired by Noni Jean’s journey.

“Beyond The Lights” hits theaters November 14th 2014.
