Stargate Reboot Announced

Back in 1994 before Roland Emmerich was a household name, a science fiction film came around called Stargate. The story explored the roots of aliens in our universe and their influence on Egyptian culture and hieroglyphic language.

It was off the success of Stargate that Emmerich would become the master of the disaster film with other classic gems such as Independence Day, Godzilla (the 1998 version of course), and the Day After Tomorrow.

Variety broke a new story today stating  Emmerich and and original producer Dean Devlin are once again traveling to the world of massive metal rings to create a Stargate reboot with the anticipation of launching a new trilogy of films.

Although details are all but nonexistent at this point as the news has just broken, MGM chairman-CEO Gary Barber had this to say:

“We couldn’t be more excited to once again partner with Roland and Dean, the world-class creators of the original ‘Stargate,’ to bring their reinvigorated vision of this wildly popular property to audiences of multiple generations…’Stargate’ is one of the biggest titles in MGM’s vast library, and we look forward to adding this great franchise to our slate.”

After grossing nearly $200-million, one would have assumed that a sequel would have been a no brainer. Instead, the studio chose to go the lesser route creating a number of different television incarnations of the film. It’s possible Emmerich is looking to cash in all of these years later as rebooted films appear to once again be a hot topic in Hollywood.
