Welcome back to the latest edition of Week of Geek – Covering all of our favorite topics from last week and some news items you may have missed on the first go around.
The idea of Week of Geek is not necessarily to break the news but rather inform you about it!
The end of April going into the first week of May had a bunch of entertainment items pop up onto our radar. Here are just a few that caught our eye.
Jump on in – We’re a little late this week but hope you find some things at least a little bit entertaining!
1. Zack Snyder To Direct Justice League
As the DC Universe tries to play catch up with the massive Marvel Universe, it became even more apparent Warner Bros. is putting its full faith into Zack Snyder as it was announced he would take control of an upcoming Justice League movie. Snyder was behind Man of Steel and the upcoming Batman Vs. Superman film which will see the two superhero’s collide for the first time on screen.
It’s believed the Justice League film is currently slated to follow after the events of Superman Vs. Batman.It should be no surprise Warner Bros. is trying to do what Marvel has done in reverse order by creating a massive ensemble film with A-list actors and then splitting off to do stand alone stories. We’ll have to wait and see how it all pays off in the years to come.
The Justice League movie is believed to hit theaters in 2017.
2. First Trailer For The Leftovers
HBO gave audiences a glimpse of the highly anticipated series The Leftovers and boy does it look thought provoking. The Leftovers is a new take on the Biblical Rapture and Apocalypse starting off with events in which 2% of the world’s population suddenly disappears.
The Leftovers is based off of the novel by the same name written by Tom Perrotta. Perrotta has teamed up with Damon Lindelof and Peter Berg to bring the novel version to the small screen. Check out the HBO trailer below:

The Leftovers premieres June 29th on HBO.
3. Halo TV Series Coming To Showtime
It looks like the long awaited Halo TV series is finally starting to get some traction. If you’re even the slightest fan of the franchise you know what an absolute chore it’s been trying to get a life action film up and running.
It now looks like all of that has officially been pushed aside for a television series and things are gearing up. It was originally believed that as Microsoft looks to step into the world of having it’s own programing, a Halo series was one of the front-runners for this endeavor. It now looks like Showtime subscribers will also have the opportunity at access to the TV series.
Variety originally broke the story on the ever-closing deal, which also links Steven Spielberg as an executive to the project. At this time there’s no scheduled date for the airing of the Halo TV series but keep your ears perked for this announcement!

4. WWE Tough Enough Coming To The Network
Any fan of the WWE or recent subscriber to the recently launched WWE Network knows there’s a heavy push for original content. The Network recently launched it’s attempted reality show Legends House which features a number of WWE veterans, or legends as their referred to in the world of sports entertainment, living under one roof. It’s Real World meets the Surreal Life grouping a number of our favorite superstars of the 80s and 90s.
Another WWE show of the past is also looking to gain new legs. It was recently announced WWE is now looking to bring Tough Enough back. The show is based on young talent or independent wrestlers trying to break out and join the big time. The original Tough Enough ran for a total of five seasons and has had mixed reviews.
There is no expected air date for the once again revived show but it’s definitely something the WWE will be bringing back. Will we see the next big WWE superstar come from a re-iteration of Tough Enough?
5. Matt Smith Joins Terminator Cast
Step aside Doctor Who fans because the doctor is traveling through time once again! Well, not in the Whoniverse. That’s right, the most recent iteration of Doctor Who, Matt Smith, has joined the cast of the currently untitled Terminator reboot.
It even appears that Smith will be portraying a major role in the film as well. Perhaps a modern version of the T-1000 is in order? It was confirmed by Skydance Productions, the current studio slated to take on the next generation of Terminator films, on their Twitter account stating:
“We don’t have a TARDIS, but we do have a Time Lord: we’re pleased to welcome Matt Smith to the cast of #Terminator.”
Smith joins a cast that already includes Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke, Jai Courtney and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film is scheduled to hit theaters July 1st, 2015
6. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Trailer
It was only a matter of time before fans of the Call of Duty franchise got their first look at the next gen emergence for our PS3s and Xbox Ones. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will be that game as the launch trailer landed this past week.
Just when the debate always starts to heat up over the future of the franchise and whether or not it’s gone stale, a trailer like this comes along and kicks us in the gut. The trailer is jam packed with intense action and next generation graphics that look beautiful. Not to mention a pixelated version of star actor Kevin Spacey in all of his scum and villainy glory.

7. Bob Hoskins Passes Away At 71
It was a sad week as news broke that actor Bob Hoskins passed away at the age of 71. Hoskins starred in a number of roles with his most famous likely being that of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Hoskins had other notable films such as The Long Good Friday and Mona Lisa.
On a personal level, I remember Hoskins mostly for his role in Super Mario Brothers and Hook – A role that Hoskins utterly hated and claimed to be one of his biggest regrets and another that also isn’t all too memorable. It’s not that I view these films as his best but rather as tributes to my age when these films was released. Although Who Framed Roger Rabbit is undoubtedly Hoskins most famous role, it was his acting ability that made some of his lesser known films attain the cult following that they have today.
Hoskins retired from acting last year after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease the year before. He was a great actor whose talent will be missed.
